Enrico Onofri is an artist with a multi-faceted career, who rose to prominence as a conductor at the most prestigious theatres after having gained international fame there as a violinist.
Former principal conductor of the Filarmonica Toscanini from 2020 to 2024, he is currently associate conductor of the Münchener Kammerorchester, artistic partner of the Haydn Philharmonie, associate conductor of the Orchestre National d'Auvergne, besides being founder and conductor of the Imaginarium Ensemble and music director of the Real Câmara, Lisbon.
Enrico Onofri grew up at his parents’ antiques atelier in Ravenna, surrounded by the beauty of the past and, from the outset of his music studies, developed a deep passion for historically informed performances, exploring the repertoire from the 17th to the 20th century, creating a personal style through his knowledge of early performance techniques, seen as an exceptional source of inspiration for new ideas and interpretative horizons.
After debuting at a young age alongside Jordi Savall and Nikolaus Harnoncourt, he was one of the founding members of Il Giardino Armonico, the ensemble in which he was first violinist and soloist until 2010.
Since 2002, alongside his work as a violinist, he has become a conductor of symphony, chamber and historically inspired orchestras, such as the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Akademie für Alte Musik, Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, Camerata Bern, Bochumer Symphoniker, and Lucerne Festival Strings. Others include the Kammerorchester Basel, Tafelmusik Toronto, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Real Orquesta Sinfonica de Sevilla, Orchestre de l'Opéra de Lyon, Orquesta Sinfonica de Galicia, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Real Filharmonia de Galicia, Sinfonietta Riga, Orchestra La Scintilla, Bremer Philharmoniker and Orchestra Fondazione Arena di Verona.
Over the last ten years, he has also devoted his attention to opera productions, conducting at the Opéra de Lyon, Teatro de la Maestranza Sevilla, Halle Staatstheater and Opernhaus Zürich, and working with stage directors Alessio Pizzech, Mariame Clément, David Marton, Stephen Lawless and Nina Russi. In 2025 he will conduct Il trionfo dell’onore by Alessandro Scarlatti at the Teatro Malibran, Venice, to commemorate the three-hundredth anniversary of the composer’s death.
He won the 2019 Abbiati Award for best soloist of the year, and has received numerous, prestigious discographic awards resulting from a vast catalogue of recordings both as soloist and conductor. His most recent achievements with Imaginarium Ensemble include the Diapason d'or de l'année 2020 for "Into Nature" and Choc! Classica & Diapason d'or 2021 for "Seicento!". January 2025 marks the beginning of a partnership with record label Harmonia Mundi for an impressive symphonic cycle dedicated to Classical-era composers.
